The location and its history

Since 2012, numerous civil society initiatives have come together on the site of the Kleine Stadt Farm at Naufahrtweg 14 in Vienna's 22nd district (Donaustadt). They focus on solidarity agriculture, sustainable nutrition, co-creation of our living environment, animal-assisted education as well as artistic, artisanal and social approaches to sustainable development.

In 2014, a few initiatives founded the association “KLEINE STADT FARM - Verein zur Förderung des Gemeinwohls”. Today, this association of around 20 social and ecological organizations and cultural workers - with a total of around 500 people involved - is the biggest urban farming project in Austria. The Kleine Stadt Farm is jointly managed, used and cultivated - most of it with great voluntary commitment.

The Salettl am Gemeinschaftshof was originally designed and built as an educational space for organic farming. Since 2020, it has been transformed into a cultural, educational and event space for sustainable development. With the help of artistic and cultural activities, a place of exchange is to be created that takes up the great potential of the initiatives and networks of the Kleine Stadt Farm for socially and ecologically sustainable development, expands it and carries it into the neighborhood, the district, the city and beyond.

Artist-in-Residence

The Salettl Residency Program will take place for the fourth time in 2025 and aims to offer artists the opportunity to enter into direct dialogue with the community of the Kleine Stadt Farm and the surrounding in order to develop a project on site. At the end of the residency, the results will be presented at a public event and accompanied by a discursive format.

This year's call is directed towards artists who submit a project specifically for the context of the Kleine Stadt Farm community project with reference to the district of Donaustadt's annual theme of 'social cohesion' (in German: Zusammenhalt).

The Salettl Residency Program 2025 includes:

  • Residency from 1 June to 30 June 2025

  • Final presentation on 27 June 2025

  • Living and working space in the Salettl

  • Stipend of 1.800 €

Artists are required to cover the costs for travel, materials, and meals themselves and be present on site at Kleine Stadt Farm for at least 80% of the scholarship period.

Accommodation

The artists live and work in the Salettl at the community farm, which is used the rest of the year as an event and cultural venue by the community. The 160 m2 area of the Salettl offers space to work, a separable living and sleeping area, a fully equipped kitchen, WiFi and a toilet with sink. The shower and washing machine are located in the building next door and are shared with the residents of the main house.

The community farm is located near the Lobau-Donauauen national park. People work on the site in different initiatives and projects. There are some animals living at the farm and there are outdoor swimming places. There is a good connection to the city via the metro and bus lines, as well as an attractive bike path connection (Donauinsel, Prater). Groceries can be purchased directly at the farm, as well as in nearby supermarkets.

Groups and partners / family members

The grant is primarily designed for individual artists. Groups can only be accommodated to a limited extent and pay an additional fee of 50 Euro per person.

Individual artists may bring their partners/family members. They pay an extra charge of 250 Euro per person. Children up to 12 years of age may be brought at no extra charge.

Accessibility

Unfortunately, the buildings are very limited or not at all accessible for wheelchairs. There is no barrier-free toilet, shower and washing machine on the premises. If you have any questions, we can answer them in advance via email.
